Artist Biography
Born in London in 1870, Arthur Vidal Diehl immigrated to New York City about 1891. Largely self taught—though he possibly studied for a short time in Milan—he exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1899. He was best known for his dunescapes and beach and harbor scenes of Cape Cod, and Fox Movietone produced a short film of Diehl working in Provincetown in the 1920s. Diehl worked throughout the northeast, holding studios in New Jersey, Massachusetts, Connecticut, and even for a time in Florida. He was known to work quickly from memory, and to converse with his patrons as they watched
