Artist Biography
A prominent member of the Hudson River School’s second generation of artists, James R. Brevoort created rich, atmospheric landscapes that evoked nature’s quiet mystery. Brevoort originally trained as an architect, graduating from New York University’s School of Design in 1854, and his paintings’ subtle compositions bare his skill as a draughtsman. He went on to study painting at the National Academy of Design and was named their Professor of Scientific Perspective in 1872. He also helped to found the Yonkers Art Association. Brevoort’s work is now in The Corcoran Gallery of Art, the Hudson River Museum, and the Saint Louis
