Artist Biography

A talented marine and landscape painter, Edmund Darch Lewis studied in Philadelphia under the renowned nineteenth-century artist Paul Weber. Lewis began his career painting Pennsylvania landscapes, but by the mid-1870s had turned increasingly to maritime subjects, painting extensively along the Northeast coast between Cape May, New Jersey, and Narragansett, Rhode Island. Lewis was independently wealthy and also enjoyed building an impressive art collection of his own. He exhibited his in Philadelphia, New York, and Boston, and his works are in the permanent collections of the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. His auction
