Private Midwestern collection

Note: From 1881 until 1885, Gilbert Gaul lived in Van Buren County, Tennessee, on a farm inherited from his uncle, Hiram Gilbert Gaul. The artist converted the barn into a studio where he painted scenes of the surrounding landscape and local sharecroppers. This painting is most likely from this period.
