Artist Biography

Known for his spirited images of crashing surf upon rocky coastlines, Waugh emerged as a major seascape painter at the turn of the nineteenth century. After studying under Thomas Eakins at the Pennsylvania Academy of Design, he won notice with prizes from the National Academy of Design and the Art Institute of Chicago, as well as a gold medal from the Philadelphia Art Club. He was named an Academician at the National Gallery of Design and was admitted into the Royal Academy in Bristol, England, the National Arts Club, and the Boston Art Club.
