Artist Biography
Born in Austria or Poland in 1860, Karl Witkowski is known for his genre paintings. His work typically features scenes of newsboys and children in urban settings, and his style has been compared to that of John George Brown (1831–1913). Witkowski received his formal education at the Czartkow Academy of Art and at the prestigious Académie Julian in Paris, where he studied from 1887 to 1888. After immigrating to the United States, he lived and worked primarily in New Jersey. Witkowski’s paintings were exhibited at the National Academy of Design in 1899. Today, his work may be found in the
