Note: Emile Albert Gruppe created numerous depictions of the cliffsides of Bass Rocks in Gloucester, Massachusetts. Gruppe is often associated with the artist’s haven, first visiting in the summer of 1925 and later establishing his studio on nearby Rocky Neck.

Artist Biography

Son of internationally recognized painter, Charles Gruppe, Emile Albert Gruppe became known in his own right for his vibrant harbor scenes. Born in Rochester, New York, Gruppe studied at the National Academy of Design, the Art Student’s League, New York and at the Grand Chaumière, Paris. During his studies, Gruppe became associated with George Bridgman, Charles Chapman, Richard Miller, and John F. Carlson, with whom, in 1942, he would establish the Gruppe Summer School in Gloucester, Massachusetts.
