Winter in Switzerland was likely part of a set depicting the four seasons. Cropsey painted at least six sets of these small seasonal landscapes, which would have been held in one frame. He often depicted Summer in Italy, Spring in England, Autumn in America, and Winter in Switzerland. There are only two known sets still united in a single frame. These paintings showcased not only the varied beauty nature offers throughout the year, but also the distinct geography of each country. In this work, Cropsey highlights the breathtaking scale of Switzerland’s mountains.
