Note: Comprised of two building complexes and occupying thirteen acres of land, Windsor Castle is located in the county of Berkshire in England. The palace was originally built in the 11th century and is the longest occupied castle in Europe, having housed forty monarchs. At the time of this painting, the castle was the royal residence of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. By the mid-nineteenth century, Windsor Castle had become a popular site for American tourists and artists like Sanford Robinson Gifford and John Frederick Kensett. Jervis McEntee paints his depiction in a romantic haze, showing several figures enjoying themselves on the castle grounds.
