In this work, James Hope depicts Watkins Glen in Schuyler County, New York, now the most renowned of the Finger Lakes State Parks. A member of the National Academy of Design, Hope served in nearly a dozen Civil War battles; in the final two decades of his life, however, he settled in Watkins Glen, where he established a studio and art gallery.
