Note

Laurence A. Campbell, born in Philadelphia in 1939 at the end of the Great Depression, grew up near the Philadelphia Museum of Art and the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, where early exposure to artists like Claude Monet and Camille Pissarro shaped his approach. He became known for urban scenes of New York and Philadelphia, often featuring flags and shifting weather, rendered in a subdued palette with a strong sense of light. After 9/11, his passion turned almost exclusively to painting cities with the American flag, his most sought-after works today. View Across 5th Avenue, 29th Street depicts a snowy day on Fifth Avenue, where pedestrians and waving flags animate the winter scene.
