Note: This painting will be included in the forthcoming catalogue raisonné of the artist’s work by Phyllis Braff, Stephen L. Good, and Melissa Speidel.
Phyllis Braff contends that this painting depicts Three Mile Harbor on the coast of Long Island. The harbor is named for its three-mile distance from East Hampton. Thomas Moran had a home and studio nearby and spent several months there in 1888. The artist first traveled to eastern Long Island in 1878 and painted numerous scenes in the area.
