Note

A recipient of many awards, including the J. Francis Murphy Memorial Prize in 1928, Carl Wuermer was a well-recognized landscape painter in his time. After studying at the Art Institute of Chicago and the Art Students League in New York City, he settled in Woodstock, New York where he depicted the rural scenery of the town and its surrounding area. In The Wintry River, Wuermer conveys the expanse of this serene landscape, guiding the viewer’s eye along the river to the snow-covered hillsides deep in the background.
