Note
Painted in 1907, The White Sloop (Peconic Bay), exemplifies Irving Ramsey Wiles’s mastery of light as well as his close personal connection to the Long Island coast. Wiles’s Peconic landscapes and seascapes reveal a personal and relaxed side of his work. The white-sailed sloop at center anchors a tranquil marine scene rendered with fluid brushwork and the luminous color typical of American Impressionism. His fluid brushwork, often compared to that of John Singer Sargent, conveys light and atmosphere with striking naturalness. Peconic held deep meaning for Wiles, who established an art school there with his father and made it his summer home for many years.
