Note
A resident of the Tenth Street Studio Building and the first president of the Brooklyn Academy of Design, William Hart was a prominent contributor to exhibitions and an active member of artist associations. His painting philosophy was grounded in influencing the scenery with his own poetic sentiment, rather than adhering to strict replication of the landscape. In The Setting Sun, ca. 1860s, Hart depicts a tranquil pastoral scene, the water in the foreground glowing with the warm light of the sun.
