Describing the moonlight paintings, Blakelock scholar Norman Geske stated that “the ambience of the picture takes on an almost sultry richness, the foliage a density, a moonlight effulgence that is nearly tropical.” Blakelock’s dreamlike nocturnes demand close inspection through their interplay of color and tone, subtle vibrations, and experimental, dissonant rhythms.
