Note

A Brooklyn native, Sydney Laurence was the first professional painter to make his home in Anchorage and is the foremost painter of Alaskan landscape. An avid traveler, he spent time in Algiers, Venice, and Bavaria, and even survived a shipwreck in the frigid Alaskan surf. Laurence was especially drawn to the Northern Lights and returned to the subject repeatedly in his work. He attended Peekskill Military Academy and studied painting under Edward Moran and at the Art Students League of New York. From 1887 to 1890, he exhibited at the National Academy of Design and the Paris Salon Laurence was a member of the Royal Society of British Artists and the Salmagundi Club.
