The painting depicts the urban landscape of Manhattan in 1913, while also highlighting Cecil Chichester’s particular focus on light: the gradually fading natural light of the evening sky, as well as the artificial light from the gas lamps in Madison Square Park and the illuminated windows of the Flatiron Building.
