Note
Blakelock scholar Norman Geske, in Beyond Madness: The Art of Ralph Blakelock, 1847–1919, observes that the artist at times adopted a freer, expressive manner, with night scenes approaching abstraction. He suggests it is “not improbable that Blakelock recognized an innovative concept and proceeded to experiment in his own way in a purely private exercise of perception and skill.”[1]
