Note

A colleague and friend of second-generation Hudson River School artists John Frederick Kensett and Sanford R. Gifford, Whittredge began his career painting landscapes of the Catskills and New England in a similar style. His later paintings, however, reveal a shift toward portrayal of atmospheric effect, subdued palette, and poetic sensibility associated with painters such as George Inness, as demonstrated in the present work.
