Note
George Cochran Lambdin was a 19th-century American painter best known for his popular floral still lifes, especially of roses. He studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and, during the Civil War, created numerous genre scenes depicting soldiers and domestic life. In his later years, due to health issues, he settled in Philadelphia and focused on flower painting, known for its meticulous realism and aesthetic elegance. Many of his works were reproduced as chromolithographs and widely circulated, leaving a lasting impact on the development of American still-life painting. Swamp Rose-Mallow by a Fence exemplifies his mature style, blending botanical precision with emotional atmosphere.
