Note: Albert Bierstadt took numerous sketching trips across Europe and the American West, studying various terrains and their quality of light. After returning to his studio, the artist would create magnificent landscapes based on his sketches and memory. In Sunrise, Bierstadt fills the sky with rich orange hues, inviting the viewer to imagine the sun hiding just beyond the mountain range.
