St. Ives began to emerge as an American art center in the mid-to-late 1800s, attracting visitors such as James McNeill Whistler and Frederick Waugh. Hayley Lever enjoyed a lively social life there amongst the community, though his primary pursuit was painting, where he honed his plein air painting skills.[1] Influenced by the works of Vincent van Gogh, he used contrasting colors and thick paint to create a bright physical surface in St. Ives, Cornwall. Lever’s work is held in numerous museum collections including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Dallas Museum of Art, and the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts.
