Note

Carlson was known for his tonalist snow scenes and lauded as “an idealist of pure beauty…a realist as to detail, a poet as to color, and, above all, a master of tone.”[1] He painted most of his canvases in winter, as in the summer he was busy teaching at the Art Students League in Woodstock, where he taught for over a decade, before creating his own summer school in Woodstock for landscape painting. His landscapes can be found in several museum collections, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Smithsonian American Art Museum, the Sheldon Museum of Art in Lincoln, Nebraska, and the Springville Museum of Art in Utah, among others.

Catherine Latta and her husband, Laurence Latta, were prominent collectors of nineteenth- and twentieth-century American, European, and Arab art.
