Note
Rocks and Brook in the Catskills is likely the work recorded as No. 312 in A Memorial Catalogue of the Paintings of Sanford Robinson Gifford, N.A., published by the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 1881. According to art historian Ila Weiss, “This painting is among a group of early studies by Gifford that examine the forms and textures of water, rocks, and trees, landscape elements then new to his work that would evolve and figure prominently throughout his career.” She also points out that the location depicted in this painting is likely a bend in Catskill Creek, below Haines Falls.
