In the 1850s and 1860s, alongside his peers John F. Kensett and Sanford R. Gifford, James A. Suydam was integral to the practice of Luminism, delicately articulating light and atmosphere to create charming landscapes. In River Sunset, Suydam presents a favorite motif of his: the setting sun, recording the subtle changes in color as the sun dips below the horizon.
