Note
Painted in the year of his passing, Pond at Twilight showcases Blakelock’s mastery of the “bucolic ingredients of nineteenth-century American landscapes—the sheen of a lake’s surface, the Gothic drama of granite cliffs, the subtle poetry of a twilight sky with its gradations of blue to lavender to chartreuse, pink.”[1]
