In his Montauk paintings, Hassam viewed the shores of Long Island in classical terms. The critic Royal Cortissoz commented, “It has appealed to his fancy to visualize in this land of dunes and sea something of the form and movement which we associate with the age of Pericles. Nature and myth are conjoined in his work…It is all rather daring–and successful.”_[1] To Hassam, the landscape had an unspoiled, timeless beauty.

This painting will be included in the forthcoming catalogue raisonné of the artist’s work by Stuart P. Feld and Kathleen Burnside.
