Note: Newtown Creek is a tributary of the East River running between Brooklyn and Queens in New York. By the early twentieth century, the area had become a major industrial site with numerous refineries active along its banks. Jack Lorimer Gray’s depiction of Newtown Creek features a Paragon Oil building on the left and smoke rising past the distant view of the Manhattan skyline.
