Note
Wendel resided in Newport on two occasions, first in 1882 and again in 1884, the year this painting was completed. The Newport subject reflects his early stylistic development, shaped by his studies with Frank Duveneck in Munich. The scene likely represents the streets adjacent to his studio, where he employed vigorous brushwork to capture the roadway and snow-laden trees, while relying on a subdued, earth-toned palette.
