Note
A New Jersey native, Henry Martin Gasser painted scenes that demonstrate a sense of place and feeling that most can identify with. As a frequent exhibitor in solo and group exhibitions, he received many accolades and over one hundred awards and medals. Gasser’s success and popularity was derived from his dedication to painting and willingness not to idealize. Gasser authored numerous influential books on painting and was deeply engaged in the art community, holding leadership roles in major institutions such as the American Watercolor Society and the National Academy of Design, where he won the Hallgarten Prize in 1943. Gasser’s work is held in dozens of institutional collections including The Metropolitan Museum of Art, Smithsonian American Art Museum, and the New Britian Museum of Art.
