Note
American art historian and Herzog scholar Donald S. Lewis Jr. describes Herzog’s Florida paintings as evidence of the artist’s “remarkable powers of observation,” noting that Herzog “invented a visual description that compares with the atmospheric conditions, the light, and the special coloration of the area’s unique natural environment.” According to Lewis, these works most fully demonstrate Herzog’s mastery in capturing the distinctive qualities of light.[1]
