North Conway, N. H., 1849, ink on paper, signed lower right: J.F.C. / Rome 1849; Newington-Cropsey Foundation, Hastings-On-Hudson, New York
Note: This painting has been authenticated by the Newington‐Cropsey Foundation and will be included in any forthcoming additions to the catalogue raisonné of the artist’s work.
The inscription, Rome, near the artist’s signature, indicates that Cropsey painted the landscape in Rome, where he lived from 1847–1849. The painting may be based on earlier sketches he made in New Hampshire. The artist created several similar mountain scenes in different scales and perspectives, such as the ink drawing North Conway, which depicts a similar wooden cabin and mountain peak.
