Note
A member of The Eight and prominent leader of the Ashcan School, Robert Henri first visited Monhegan Island, Maine, in the summer of 1903, a locale that he would continue to visit, drawn to its raw, dramatic landscape and constantly shifting weather. He returned to the island in 1911, bringing his friend George Bellows, and again in 1918, when his style had shifted towards more focused explorations of dense woodlands using expressive pastels. Henri’s works are featured in the permanent collections of esteemed institutions, including the Corcoran Gallery of Art, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, National Academy Museum, National Gallery of Art, National Portrait Gallery, Smithsonian American Art Museum, and Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts.
