Note
This painting has been authenticated and catalogued by the University of Nebraska Inventory as NBI-1837, category II.
Blakelock traveled to California in the 1870s, where he painted another work titled Seal Rocks, depicting seals on rocky outcrops. Like Marine, Seal Rock, the subject is thought to represent the small offshore islands near San Francisco, long known for their seal colonies.[1]
