Born in Philadelphia, Doughty was among the first American artists to move beyond purely topographical representation, seeking instead to convey the expressive and poetic qualities of nature. His innovative approach brought him immediate success and exerted a formative influence on the next generation of landscape painters, later known as the Hudson River School.[1]
