Note

In the early twentieth century, critics hailed Hayley Lever as a talented “pioneering nonconformist who followed his own path, melding an array of advanced stylistic practices in accordance with his inner emotions,” while portraying subject matter that was recognizable and highly appealing to audiences. With support from the Arts Students League, Lever spent the summer of 1922 teaching painting classes in Woodstock, New York where an artists’ colony thrived. Inspired by the beauty he created several landscape paintings of the area.
