Note

Born in Honolulu, Hawaii, Howell studied at the Corcoran School of Art in Washington, D.C., and began exhibiting her work while still in school. Howell’s early work often depicted the interiors and exteriors of classic New England architecture, later adding landscapes and cityscapes to her oeuvre. In High Street, Newburyport, Mass., Howell most likely depicts on the left, the fence in front of Timothy Dexter House at 201 High Street, a historic 1771 Federal-style mansion. Today, Howell’s paintings can be found in many esteemed collections, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Corcoran Gallery of Art, and the Art Institute of Chicago.
