Note
From an early age, de Haas was fascinated by marine navigation, closely observing the movements of ships in Holland’s rivers and canals. He was a student of Louis Meyer, then regarded as Europe’s foremost marine painter, and quickly distinguished himself, earning praise from the Dutch Queen and winning numerous silver and gold medals in both Europe and the United States. A member of the Rotterdam Academy and an academician of the Academy of Design in New York, de Haas relocated to New York City in 1858, where he furthered his distinguished artistic career.[1] His work is held in collections at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, the New York Historical Society, the Mead Art Museum at Amherst College, among others.
