Note

A student of William Merritt Chase and a resident of the famed Tenth Street Studio Building, Irving Ramsay Wiles became one of America’s foremost portrait and figure painters. Strongly influenced by French art, Wiles frequently chose his wife and other women as models, depicting them in fashionable, elaborate attire such as veils, kimonos, negligees, capes, elegant dresses, and fur coats. Gladys portrays Wiles’s daughter, Gladys Lee Wiles, who would later follow in her father’s footsteps, becoming an Associate National Academician and an accomplished painter in her own right.
