Note
Hermann Herzog, a prolific artist with over 1,000 works, immigrated to the United States in the late 1860s and settled in Philadelphia, where he lived and worked for the last sixty years of his life. Though he gained early recognition in Europe—with patrons such as Queen Victoria and the Grand Duke Alexander of Russia—Herzog is best known for his American landscapes. Drawn to the natural beauty of Pennsylvania, he painted extensively on site, capturing the waterfalls, river rapids and rugged terrain of the Brandywine, Chester and Pike Counties, and the Delaware Valley.
