Note

Generally considered one of America’s great marine painters, with his deft handling of light, tone, and texture, Waugh’s early work focused on urban and pastoral landscapes, such as Evening. Waugh garnered many prizes for his work throughout his career, including the Popular Prize in the Carnegie Internation for four successive years, 1934-1937; the Clarke Prize, the National Academy of Design in 1910; the Harris Medal, Art Institute of Chicago in 1912; the Palmer Memorial Prize, National Academy of Design, in 1929 and many more. His work is represented in the permanent collections of The Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, and the Brooklyn Museum, among others.
