Laurence A. Campbell, born in Philadelphia in 1939 at the close of the Great Depression, grew up near the Philadelphia Museum of Art and the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, where early exposure to artists such as Claude Monet and Camille Pissarro, along with the urban winter scenes of Guy Wiggins, helped shape his approach. He became known for his own depictions of New York and Philadelphia, rendered in a subdued palette with a nuanced sensitivity to light.
