Note

Chapin began his painting career in the early 1870s, depicting the landscapes of New York’s Adirondack region. Although he later worked in cities including San Francisco, New Orleans, and Los Angeles, he frequently returned to New York to paint and remained closely connected to its artistic community, as a founder of the Lotus Club. In December 1888, Chapin disappeared, and his body was later discovered in the North River in the Adirondack region—a tragic end in the region where his artistic journey had begun.
