This work depicts Alan Messersmith, a longtime friend of the artist, on Murphy Road at the Messersmith Farm in Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania. The Messersmith’s were neighbors of Wyeth and he frequently depicted their farm. The composition of this watercolor is almost identical to a tempera painting titled End of the Road, which Wyeth completed in the same year.
