Note
Richards was widely recognized as one of the most successful painters of marine scenes of his generation. Known for his depictions of New England seascapes, he captured the active dynamism of nature’s ever-changing state with his “eloquent depictions of waves crashing against rocks or curling in translucent spray against the shore.”[1] Most collectors and scholars believe that his best paintings were produced in the early 1870s. Richards’ work is held in collections at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, The National Gallery of Art in Washington D.C., the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Yale University Art Gallery, the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and the Brooklyn Museum of Art, among others.
