A label on the back reads: “From the rocky gorge, with its vineclad walls and feathery waterfall, are seen the valley and the stupendous snow-capped peaks of the Chilean Andes. Overhead is a blue sky. A subtle feeling of the tropics pervades the canvas.” In the early 1870s Ferguson traveled and painted in South America, with his home base in Santiago, Chile.
