By the Window is part of a series of paintings Dufner created in the 1910s featuring women seated near windows. Related works include Margaret by the Window (c. 1914–15), a composition set in the same interior, and Gladys by the Window, exhibited at the National Academy of Design in 1913. The former is held in the current collection.
