Note
Claude Raguet Hirst, an Ohio-born artist, submitted her work under the name Claude R. Hirst to obscure her gender and secure recognition in the male-dominated art world. She was the only woman of her era to achieve prominence with the trompe-l’oeil technique. Hirst’s compositions, such as Basket of Apples, are typically set against dark backgrounds, containing objects rich in symbolism centrally arranged in a pyramidal or triangular formation.
