A member of The Ten and the Cos Cob Art Colony, Julian Alden Weir was an American Impressionist painter known for his vivid color and short brushstrokes. Scholar Anne Dawson suggests that The Hunter was painted on Weir’s land in Windham, Connecticut, where Weir was able to escape the pressures of life in New York City. Weir frequently featured his love of hunting and his hunting dogs in his paintings. His works are featured in the permanent collections of The Art Institute of Chicago, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, Smithsonian American Art Museum, and Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, among others.

Paul Schulze was a prominent Chicago businessman and art collector who owned major works by J. Alden Weir.
